Sir Charles Orr's Memoirs Volume 3

USS Oregon

USS Oregon had played an important role in the recently finished Spanish-American conflict of 1898 when she chased down Spanish ships attempting to flee Santiago de Cuba. She was then sent to the Phillipines as it came under US control as a result of the Spanish American War. She had visited Japan and was en route to Hong Kong when the Boxer Rebellion began. Originally she steamed to Taku but hit some uncharted rocks off the Bohai Strait and had to return to Japan for repairs. In August she returned to China and patrolled off the mouth of the Yangtze River from Wusong until 5 May 1901.
