Baker Greets the 10th Hussars

The 10th Hussars were transported from Bombay to Suakin on the coast of Sudan on HMS Jumna. Valentine went on board on 18 Feb 1884 to meet them for the first time since 1875. It was an emotional get together. The band played Auld Lang Syne and the men cheered him over and over again. This sketch by Melton Prior has a note underneath which says that they cheered him 10 or 12 times. The CO Colonel Wood is seen wearing a spiked helmet, shaking hands with General Baker who wears a turban.
