An Evening in Cahir

The second cartoon in Chapmanā€™s series shows three privates in a local pub in Cahir, a town on the southern edge of Tipperary. They are dressed in dark blue stable jackets and dress trousers with pill-box caps. The locals do not seem to be paying any attention to them and they do not seem to have any lack of confidence. One hussar chats to the barmaid and the two in the centre have something going on. The soldier with his back to us is drinking Guinness but his companion is nonchalantly pushing up his drinking arm. At first glance it looks as if he is leaning his elbow on the bar, but they are too far away from it so we must assume he is trying to get his friend drunk.
