A Tenth Rejected

The subtitle to this unsigned cartoon is The Dandified Coxcomb in a Bandbox. It was published on 10 April 1824. The local farmers were required to pay a tithe, or tax, of one tenth of their produce to the church. The farmer’s wife offers ‘a Tenth’ to the parson, in the form of a miniature officer of the 10th Hussars. This figure is arrogantly scrutinising the cleric with an eyeglass, but the offer is angrily rejected, the Parson saying that “I never tithe Monkeys”. This must be another word for Dandy. The image is courtesy of the British Museum.
