Arrogance (or Nonchalance)

The signature at bottom left of this two-framed cartoon is R Cruikshank and it is dated April 1824. It depicts the officers’ contempt for the ladies of Dublin in their loutish behaviour and insulting comments. The word ‘Trot’ is repeated which must have been used by these cavalrymen to equate women with horses. The introduction is spurned by the officer in a shako who says,”No! Tenth don’t daunce!” and the languid officer, keeping his hands in his pockets, demands, “Trot her out!! Let us see her foine legs.” The second frame suggests that the dandy has asked for the lady to be brought to him in the drawing room for some intimacy. But the lady is not to be used in that way and, mimicking his eye-glass scrutiny, calls for him to be trotted out. The image is courtesy of the British Museum.
