Catching Goose!

Another Williams Cartoon, published by Fairburn on 26 April 1824. The title is, ‘Catching Goose!! or a Rencontre between A GALLANT TENTH and A VALIANT NINTH !!!’. Two officers of the Tenth fall foul of a local tailor. This was while they were stationed in Ireland, prior to their move to Dublin. They were split up between Cahir, New Ross, Fethard, Carrick-on-Suir and Clogheen. The tailor is saying, “How dare you insult my Wife, you Villain. I’ll give you Goose and trim your jacket for you, in spite of your noble Birth and superior Blood though I am styled by the vulgar only the Ninth part of a Man.” The officer is saying, “Damn the Tailor! I shall never relish hot Goose again as long as I live.”

The tailor’s wife eggs her husband on to further violence, “My Dear, U — nick him with your Shears, and spoil his Gallivanting!!!” The unhelpful fellow officer is saying, “This comes of poking your Nose in plebian premises; I’m off before the shears go to work!!!” The smoothing iron used by the tailor was called a Goose. He is using it here to burn the officer’s face. There is a letter on the ground addressed. ‘My Dear Mr Buckram….’ or perhaps it reads ‘Mrs Buckram’ and makes an improper suggestion.
