Military Nonchalance

At least four of the cartoons published by McCleary are either direct copies of Fairburn cartoons or re-drawing of the same idea. As McCleary conducted his business in Dublin his cartoons would have appealed to the local population. This cartoon, no.3 on the McCleary AMOT Index list, is subtitled ‘Military nonchalance - or arrogance of the 10th retorted’ depicting two ladies with a lighted candle remonstrating with the arrogant officer and emphasising the word ‘Trot’. This is a re-drawing of the righthand frame of the Fairburn cartoon ‘Arrogance (or Nonchalance) of the Tenth Retorted’ in which the word ‘Trot’ is also underlined. Cartoon courtesy of Trinity College Dublin.
