Private, Winter Dress, 1830

This print by E Hull, published in May 1830 with the title 10th Hussars, Private, Winter Dress, is unusual for showing the pelisse worn as a jacket rather than slung over the left shoulder. It is of blue cloth, soon to be changed to red. The fur is white and the braid and button loops across the chest are yellow worsted. There is a medal on his chest which is probably for Waterloo. His pouch-belt is white leather and supports a black leather ammunition pouch and a spring clip for his carbine. His shako is covered in a waterproof oilskin. This reproduction is not very clear but the chin chain looks as if it has a protective covering. The trousers are pale blue-grey with a double yellow stripe. Within a year or two these were changed to dark blue trousers for the winter months and white trousers for dismounted duty in the summer. A narrow white leather waist-belt supports his sword and plain black leather sabretache.
