Sergeant Major c1835

This painting of a sergeant-major of the 10th Hussars is undated but is unmistakably 1830s because of the red pelisse. The left sleeve has rank badges of four inverted chevrons with a Prince of Wales feathers badge above. The shako is taller than expected and less bell-topped in shape. The plume is a black falling horse-hair type. The trousers have the double stripe which was the distinction of the 10th Hussars at that time. His horse furniture includes a red shabraque which is covered by a black lamb-skin so that the plain unembroidered forepart is concealed. He has a plain black leather sabretache and the recently issued three-bar hilted light cavalry sword.
