Privates’ Pill-Box Forage Cap 1890s

The forage cap was so called because it is a development of the peakless soft cap worn since the early years of the 19th century, worn by men in foraging parties. See the figure seated furthest to the left of Corporal and Privates 1813. By the latter part of the century the cap had formalised and become decorated with braid on the top. This cap of the 10th Hussars had four loops with trefoil ends and a netted button on the middle. Corporals wore the same type of cap with a yellow band and braid, but sergeants and above had gold lace cap-bands and gold braid. The RSM had braid formed in a similar pattern to the officers but ranks below WO1 had the pattern shown here.
