2nd Lieutenant 1896

The dress uniform of the 10th Hussars is well modelled by this young subaltern. The blue uniform is decorated with gold chain gimp frogging across the chest as was stipulated in the dress regulations for all the hussars. The special pattern adopted by the 10th was the topmost domed cap being attached to the end of the gold shoulder cords. There were no rank badges at this stage for second lieutenants. The blue collar has a line of gold braid along the bottom edge of the gold lace. This was the same for lieutenants, but captains and above had more decorative braid. The cuff decoration is an Austrian knot of gold chain gimp edged with gold braid. This was also the same for lieutenants.

The busby is made of black sable fur and has the gold purl cap-lines wound diagonally around so that it is bunched as three cords. There is a gold gimp oval cockade near the top with the gilt plume socket above it. The white egret plume was 13 inches high from the top of the cap according to the 1891 Dress Regulations. The 1861 and 1864 DRs have 8 inch high plumes, the 1883 DR has 9 inches, so the plume continued to grow. The 1900 DR altered the plume from egret feathers to ostrich and increased the height to 15 inches. The base of the plume had black vulture feathers.
