Sergeant, Mess Dress 1914

Photos of sergeants in mess dress are rare and this picture of Sergeant G Quinn taken from the Regimental Gazette of 1914 shows that the sergeants’ mess was almost as distinguished as the officers’. The jacket has a rolled collar, in contrast to the officers’ mess jacket that fastened at the neck and had a stand collar. The jacket is dark blue, including the lapels, and the trousers were also blue, with double yellow stripes down the side. The shoulders were decorated with twisted gold cords and there was a small regimental badge on each lapel. His richly quilted gold stripes were topped with a large silver regimental badge. He has a scarlet kummerbund around his waist.
