RSM, No1 Dress 1914

The blue No1 dress is worn by the Regimental Sergeant Major in this cartoon by regimental artist, A Richards. The shoulder chains have by this time become established as part of cavalry uniform, and certain details are emphasised because this is a caricature. The shoulder chains have brass letters XH on each side and brass buttons hold them in place. The tunic is buttoned with five brass buttons and there are buttoned pockets on the breast and pockets without buttons on the hips. His rank is denoted by an embroidered crown on his right forearm, and a hallmarked silver regimental badge above it. He has bimetal badges on his collar. His forage cap, also with a regimental badge, is scarlet but the top is enclosed by a white cover which indicates that the regiment were still in South Africa just before WW1, having been shipped there from India in 1912.
