Trooper, Service Dress 1920

After the First World War, army uniform continued to be dominated by khaki service dress. The basic pattern of the uniform worn in the trenches was smartened up and the sword was returned as the symbol of the cavalryman. This private has the 1912 pattern cavalry sword attached to white straps slung from a hidden waist-belt. The ammunition bandolier is well polished, and designed to carry .303 rounds. The white lanyard has been retained on the right shoulder and the khaki forage cap returned to its stiffened appearance. The puttees have extra pale additions around the ankles and the polished boots have spurs attached. The rank of Trooper replaced that of Private in the cavalry in the aftermath of the war.
