Mounted Band c1880

The method of playing musical instruments while riding is illustrated in this watercolour. Stirrup reins guide the horse, leaving the hands free to play wind instruments. The date under the signature seems to be 1890 but there are clues to indicate that it must be earlier. The tall busby worn here was replaced by a lower version in 1888. The sword scabbard had fixed rings on each side as from 1885 but the painting shows the slings attached to movable rings in the old style. The mens’ uniforms are post-1871 because of the breeches and Hessian boots, so the date is between 1871 and 1885. The regiment had been in India from 1873 to 1884 and the band would certainly have been stationed with them. In India they would not have worn busbies so this painting must show them either pre-1873 or post-1884.
