Drumhorse, India 1904

The regiment returned to India in 1903 and were stationed firstly at Mhow where this photo was taken. The drummer was a private, named Trumpeter Pollock, and he wears the dress uniform with white Wolseley helmet. The blue drum banners, seen here, had a short life, 1902 to 1911. They adorn the drums carried by this handsome white-socked horse that was used during their time in India. The low angle of the photo allows us to see that the scarlet shabraque is not the usual drumhorse saddle cloth that only covered the hind quarters. It is in fact an officer’s shabraque that was no longer worn on officers’ chargers.
