Trumpet Major. India 1907

The Trumpet Major was photographed in Rawalpindi in 1907. He wears the special 10th Hussar khaki drill uniform for other ranks that has lapels and a shirt and tie. This was instituted by Colonel Byng in 1903. The actual title of trumpet major was downgraded to sergeant trumpeter in 1881 and not restored until 1928. His four gold chevrons are tacked onto his sleeve so that they can be removed when the tunic is washed. The silver NCO arm badge is superimposed onto the stripes and an embroidered trumpeter’s badge is above.
