Drumhorse 1961

The last time that the 10th Hussars drumhorse was on parade was in Germany. In June 1961 the regiment were stationed at Paderborn and paraded for the presentation of a guidon by the Duke of Gloucester who was Colonel-in-Chief. This photo shows the drumhorse and escort marching off parade immediately before the presentation. The banners are the 1927 red drum banners that have the battle honours up to the end of World War One. The drummer is a sergeant, escorted by two other NCOs. The 10th Hussars had been mechanised since 1936 and Centurion tanks are visible behind the horses. In 1936 they were stationed at Tidworth where they took part in a Tattoo, with the band in full dress playing from the back of an open lorry.

Jim Milsom, who was present at the parade, has made available further pictures of the Farewell to the Drumhorse Parde at Paderborn.
