Brigadier-General Thomas Walter Brand, 3rd Viscount Hampden GCVO KCB CMG


The Hon Thomas Walter Brand was born on 29 Jan 1869, the eldest son of the 2nd Viscount Hampden of Glynde. His mother was Susan Henrietta Cavendish. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. On 29 April 1899 he married Lady Katharine Mary Montagu Douglas Scott daughter of the 6th Duke of Buccleuch. They had eight children, 4 sons and 4 daughters.

He was commissioned into the 10th Hussars as 2nd lieutenant on 20 Nov 1889, promoted to lieutenant on 10 June 1891. He was a captain on 16 Feb 1898, brevet major 29 Nov 1900 and a major on 14 Jan 1903. The Army list of 1900 says that he was a brigade major in the South African Field Force. He last appears on the roll of the 10th Hussars in 1904 where the Army List says that Major the Hon Thomas Walter Brand was 2nd in Command of a Provisional Regiment of Hussars.

Other sources state that he was an officer in the Hertfordshire Regiment TA and fought in the Boer War. He commanded the 1st Hertfordshires in the First World War. In 1915 he was promoted to brigadier-general and commanded the 126th brigade at Gallipoli, then the 6th Mounted Brigade, and later the 185th Brigade at Cambrai. He succeeded to the title in 1906 on the death of his father. He was a keen polo player and was in the England team for the first international polo match against Australia. He was appointed Colonel of the 10th Hussars on 7 July 1935 for three and a half years until 28 Jan 1939. He was also Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire from 1915 to 1952. He died on 4 Sep 1958.
