Other Ranks’ Breastplate Badge

This brass breastplate badge was worn on the tack of a 10th Hussar's horse, either a private's or a corporal's. Sergeants and above had better quality harness ornaments. Officers' breastplate badges had the same design but the Prince of Wales plume was in silver metal and the rest of the badge in gilt brass. The crown dates this as Victorian, being a Guelphic, or Albert crown. In 1901 these badges were altered to the King’s crown. The lettering was also changed so that WALES’S as seen here, was changed to WALES without the apostrophe S. We are grateful to Will Mathieson for providing this photo.
