HRH Henry, Duke of Gloucester

The Duke of Gloucester was Colonel-in-Chief of the 10th Hussars from 12 Mar 1937 until the amalgamation of the 10th and 11th Hussars in October 1979. He had served in the 10th Hussars from 22 June 1920, promoted to lieutenant on 16 July 1921, captain 11 Mar 1927. In 1929 he was attached to the 11th Hussars, and was promoted to major on 6 July 1935 when he was attached to the 16th/5th Lancers.

His appointment as Colonel-in-Chief of the 10th was his first colonelcy. On the same day, 12 Mar 1937 he was appointed Colonel of the Scots Guards, also Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, the Gordon Highlanders and the Natal Mounted Rifles. On 24 Feb 1942 he was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Rifle Brigade.

He was born Prince Henry William Frederick Albert on 31 Mar 1900, the third son of King George V. He suffered ill health as a child and was the first royal child to go to school, Eton College. However, his health must have improved because he became very sporty and obsessed with football. He was a keen soldier but his royal duties prevented him from high command in the military. The King created him Duke of Gloucester on 31 Mar 1928. During the war he was a liaison officer and diplomat, then in 1945 he was appointed Governor-General of Australia. He married Lady Alice Montagu Douglas Scott in 1935 and had two sons. In 1965 he suffered his first stroke and was incapacitated until his death on 10 June 1974.
