On the Deck of the Ismore

Major Hughes-Onslow, the officer in the middle of these three cavalrymen, was the commander of A Squadron of the detachment on the SS Ismore. He stands on deck with one of the lifeboats in the background. He was second-in-command of the 10th Hussars detachment on the transport. Major Alexander was the senior officer as he had attained his majority a year before Hughes-Onslow. This is an extract from an account of the shipwreck written by Hughes Onslow:

‘The behaviour of the troops was splendid. They were as steady as if they were parading in the barrack square; every man stood in his proper place; there was not the slightest confusion or hurry; they did exactly as they were told. There is not the least doubt that it is owing to their splendid discipline that everybody was saved.’
