Captain James MacDermott


This caricature of James MacDermott was painted by Robert Dighton Junior around 1802. His uniform is blue with deep yellow facings, silver braid and a broad crimson sash. He wears a tall black cap that has a peak and a long white over red plume. MacDermott enlisted in the 2nd Foot in 1775 and served in Canada and other postings, attaining the rank of sergeant-major. He was discharged in 1793 and appointed adjutant of the 10th LD in April 1794. He was given the rank of cornet in June 1794, lieutenant in 1795 and captain in 1798. He left the regiment in 1803 and joined the West India Regiment then the 83rd Foot. He was an instructor at the Royal Military College at Great Marlow and retired in 1829 with the brevet rank of lieutenant-colonel. By that time the college was at Sandhurst. In 1830 he was a Military Knight of Windsor with the rank of colonel. He died on 2 July 1831 at the age of 72.
