Landing at Aboukir

The landing of the army at Aboukir Bay, Egypt on 8 Mar 1801 was a huge logistical undertaking. The Army was commanded by General Abercromby who was killed at Alexandria. The landings were carefully rehearsed at Marmorice Bay in Turkey and the fleet arrived at Aboukir on 1 March but had to wait until the 8th for the weather to calm down enough for the landing. So the French had plenty of warning and time to prepare for the invasion. This detail of Loutherbourg’s painting of the landing shows British infantry in boats and fighting on the beach.
