Gustavus Adolphus


Gustav II Adolf, better known as Gustavus Adolphus, was King of Sweden from 1611 to 1632. As one of the foremost soldiers of his age he championed the Protestant cause in the Thirty Years War and employed Scottish mercenaries, believed to have been as many as 20,000. He was invariably victorious in battle and developed improvements in weaponry and tactics. He was killed in battle at Lutzen in November 1632.
