Convoy to Lille 1708

This detail from one of the tapestries at Blenheim Palace depicts the convoy that Marlborough ordered to be brought from Ostend to supply the siege of Lille. The Royal Regiment took part in this risky venture and were engaged in the battle against the French who confronted the convoy at Wijnendale on 28 Sep. The battle is going on in the background, to protect the convoy and allow it to continue. The wagons in the foreground show civilian drivers sitting side-saddle on the lead horses, escorted by a sergeant holding a halberd and a private with his musket on his shoulder.
