Namur 1695

This detail of a contemporary painting by Jan Wyck in the possession of the National Army Museum shows Namur at the time of the siege. It is a well placed city, protected by the Meuse to one side, the Sambre on the other, and rocky hills behind, on which the citadel stands. The French captured it from the Dutch in 1692 and the defences were greatly strengthened by the engineer Vauban.
