Sir Robert Douglas at Steenkerque

Simkin’s painting shows Sir Robert Douglas, Colonel of the Royal Regiment, heroically recovering the lost Colour just before being killed. He was the son of Sir William Douglas of Glenbervie, 3rd Baronet. He had been captured on 23 June 1692 but later released after a ransom was paid. Another member of the Douglas clan was also killed at Steenkerque; Colonel James Douglas, Earl of Angus whose regiment later became the 26th Cameronians. They had 100 men killed and another 100 wounded in the battle.
