Tangier 1680

This print, in the possession of the National Army Museum, shows the fortified town of Tangier and a partial view of the harbour which was built under the supervision of the Earl of Peterborough, Colonel of the Tangier Regiment which later became the 2nd Foot (Queen’s). The town has streets and houses and a small area for cultivation. In 1676 the cost of maintaining the garrison was 140,000 pounds a year. The population was 2,225, mostly military personnel and families. The hinterland, shown on the map, indicates that the fighting against Moorish forces took place outside the city walls.
