Delhi Spearmen

Orlando Norie’s painting depicts the 9th Lancers attacking mutineers. The fleeing enemy shouted “Delhi bhala-wallah!” which translates as Delhi Spearmen. When the regiment was inspected by the Commander-in-Chief, Sir Colin Campbell, on 11 November, he was impressed, according to the historian George Malleson, ‘with their blue uniforms and white turbans twisted round their forage caps, their flagless lances, lean but hardy horses and gallant bearing, looked the perfection of a cavalry regiment on active service.’
