Transporting Horses by Sea

This cross-section model demonstrates the way horses were hoisted aboard ship and lowered through a hatchway to a lower deck. The canvas slings can be seen to hook onto the underside of the upper deck so that each horse is prevented from falling over or bumping into the next animal during rough weather. The model shows barrels placed in front of the horses but it is more likely that the deck would have extended all the way across so that the men could attend to their feeding, grooming and mucking out.
