9th Lancers, 1880

Men of the 9th Lancers pose in this group, wearing their quilted jackets for cold weather, probably around February 1880, six months before they set off on the march to Kandahar. They are all privates and NCOs apart from two officers in the middle row wearing gold laced pouch-belts instead of the white belts worn by the others. A trumpeter is in front of them, sitting on the ground, third from the left.
