Mutineers Surprised

The scene depicted in this print does not relate to any particular incident, but the policing activities of the 9th Lancers during their 17 months hard service would certainly have involved many instances of apprehending a convoy such as this. The lancers wear their white summer uniforms as depicted by Captain Roger Upton, an officer of the regiment, in a series of water-colours. The artist of this scene, Captain Atkinson, produced a series of contemporary prints of the Indian Mutiny, published by Day & Son. This one is no.6, in the National Army Museum collection. The mutineers are shown as surrendering to the lancers who had earned a feared reputation as the Delhi Spearmen.
