TSM David Rushe VC


Sir James Outram, commander of the division at Lucknow, praised the 9th Lancers for charging the large numbers of rebels at Moosa Bagh on 19 March 1858. In this action TSM David Rushe and Private Newell distinguished themselves by attacking and cutting up a party of enemy infantry. For their bravery they were awarded the Victoria Cross. Hope Grant’s despatch of 8 April says that they attacked eight men in a nullah and killed three of them. The citation was published in the London Gazette on 24 Dec 1858.

Troop Sergeant Major David Rushe was promoted to Regimental Sergeant Major and presented with his medal at Windsor Castle on 4 Jan 1860 by the Queen. This was added to his other medals that include the Punniar Star, the Sutlej medal, the Punjab medal with two clasps, and the Indian Mutiny medal with three clasps. He lived in Great Marlow, Bucks where he died on 6 Nov 1886. He was buried in All Saints Churchyard, Marlow.
