Oswald Stephen


Oswald Stephen Roughan was born 2nd November 1876 at Sialkot, India, to John Roughan and Elizabeth May Duffy and was the eldest of four brothers. Oswald joined the 6th Dragoons and served in South Africa during the Boer War earning the Queens South African and the Kings South African Medals.

Here Oswald Stephen is wearing the scarlet dress uniform of the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons. The 6 is on his helmet and the distinctive castle badge is on his collar. Oswald's father served in the 9th Lancers.

At the outbreak of WW1 he was sent to France with his unit. In 1915 Oswald transferred to the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. He survived the war.
