Officer's Undress Uniform, 1815

The expensive full dress jacket was saved for parades (see portrait of Major Clayton) while the less ornate version, seen here, was worn on campaign. It is waist length with short tails behind, showing white turnbacks. The cuffs are red with two gold tabs and buttons. The edge of the cuff is piped white like the collar. The jacket is single-breasted, fastened with ten gilt buttons, the collar remaining open at this date. The helmet is similar to the 1st Life Guards (see Helmet 1815). A crown and reverse cypher of George III surmount a small plate saying Royal Horse Guards Blue. There is no crest or plume on this exhibit but they were black and red and white over red respectively.
