Officer, Crimea 1854


This is how the Grenadier Guards looked at the Battle of Inkerman on 5th November. The weather was colder and greatcoats were worn. The officers had a caped coat worn over the full dress coatee. Later on in the campaign the bearskin was put aside and the more comfortable undress cap was worn, as shown in the small drawing top left. It was a field cap which was quite tall but as time went on it evolved into the field service cap which was much lower.
