27th Regiment of Foot

Sergeant 1815

The red and white plume on the side of the shako indicates that this sergeant is in a battalion company. Light company shakos had green plumes and cords, and a stringed bugle badge instead of the large brass badge. He also has tufts on his shoulder straps instead of wings and his chevrons are on one arm only. Sergeant's jackets were laced with white lace instead of the regimental pattern lace worn by the men under his command. Traditionally, regiments with buff facings had buff coloured belts and straps instead of white. He is armed with a sword and carries a pike so he has no need of the ammunition pouch which would require another wide leather belt on his left shoulder like the men. The sash round his waist is crimson and buff.
