Private 1742

The 31st had buff facings from 1715 when they were re-raised. At the battle of Dettingen, in 1743, they were cheered by King George II who mistook them for the Buffs (the 3rd Foot). From that date they became the 'Young Buffs' and proudly retained their facing colour until the reforms of 1881. The lace in 1742 was white with a buff worm.
