Officer c1792

The turned-down collar which appeared in 1768 became permanently sewn down by this time. This portrait of Major Samuel Steel clearly shows the lapels and collar which look dull yellow. The regiment had silver lace button holes for the officers, up until 1830 when they had to change to gold. The epaulette is quite small and is of silver lace and fringe on red cloth. As a field officer he would have one on the other shoulder as well. The white sword belt has a silver belt plate, the number 34 being inside a star shape.
