Officer's Shako 1844

Prince Albert was involved in the design of this cap so it has been referred to as the Albert shako ever since. It is made of black beaver, 6.75" deep, slightly wider in diameter at the bottom than the top. The front peak is 2.25' deep while the peak at the rear of the cap is 1.25" deep. The chin-chain is gilt and fixed to the sides with rose pattern ornaments. The badge is described at Officer's Shako Plate 1844-55. The ball tuft on top is made of worsted wool and is half white and half red. Other regiments had to conform to the regulated two thirds white, one third red, but the 34th insisted on this distinction which was a memorial to their action at Arroyo dos Molinos.
