Sergeants c1860

This group of sergeants and Warrant Officers was photographed in Gwalior, India. Nearly all of them are wearing full dress tunics with Kilmarnock caps. The caps are black and have brass 34 badges with brass chevrons above. The man in the middle at the back, between the Colours has a cap with no chevrons and is therefore a private. He has an undress frock which is red with a yellow collar and no white edging down the front. The most relaxed figure is the Regimental Sergeant Major, sitting in the middle, with four medals and four stripes and a crown. The cap in his hand is styled like the officers', being dark blue with a black silk cap-band, a patent leather peak and an embroidered gold 34 within a wreath. Similar caps can be seen held by seated figures, although the man seated on the left of the picture strangely has no wreath round the number. He is the only senior NCO without a medal so perhaps he has recently joined the regiment and is wearing a new style of WO badge. Seated fourth from the left is a figure wearing a different uniform. This is a blue patrol jacket which fastens down the front with hooks and eyes and is edged with black silk lace. On the shoulders are gold cords. His sash is on the right shoulder so he is non-commissioned. He may be the band master or drum-major.
