Officer 1868

The 4th were brought over from India for the campaign in Abyssinia. The men wore their hot climate uniform which was originally white but now dyed khaki. The officers had a special white version of the patrol jacket, seen here, worn with his crimson sash on one shoulder, and haversack and binoculars on the other. His waist-belt supports his revolver and his sword. The white trousers are tucked into black gaiters. The tropical helmet has a vent at the top. By the 1870s the shape of the vent changed to the more familiar roundel.
