The 4th were brought over from India for the campaign in Abyssinia. The men wore their hot climate uniform which was originally white but now dyed khaki. The officers had a special white version of the patrol jacket, seen here, worn with his crimson sash on one shoulder, and haversack and binoculars on the other. His waist-belt supports his revolver and his sword. The white trousers are tucked into black gaiters. The tropical helmet has a vent at the top. By the 1870s the shape of the vent changed to the more familiar roundel. |
