Staff Sergeant, Undress c1887

The undress tunic is a plain patrol jacket, dark green with black silk edging and cuff decoration. The visible parts of the collar are scarlet, and perhaps the cuffs as well but this is not clear. His pill-box cap is also green with a black silk cap-band. There are no visible rank badges but another photo of the same man shows three chevrons on the upper right sleeve with an embroidered crown above. His rank entitles him to have the black patent leather pouch-belt with silver metal regimental badge and whistle and chains. This is similar to the belt worn by officers but of slightly poorer quality. He wears black gloves and carries a stick. We are grateful to Marilyn Darné of Durban RSA for providing the photos.
