Corporal Signaller and Private, c1910

This is the full dress for other ranks as it was up until World War 1. Both these men are veterans of the South African War 1899-02 as they wear the Queen's and King's medals. The standing man holds a signalling flag. The badge over his chevrons has a blue flag crossed with a blue and white flag. The seated private has two good conduct stripes and a marksman's badge. The painting is by John McNeill and differs from Harry Payne's Sentry and Mounted Officer c1910 in that the white piping traces the top and front edge of the collar instead of the bottom edge.
