Other Ranks, Undress c1897

These men pose informally in a camp setting. They are mostly privates with 3 lance-corporals. There are two drummers with a side drum and a tenor drum. On the right, a man is having his hair cut and on the left a comedian brandishes a wooden mallet. Next to him is a soldier brushing his home service helmet.

The tunic they are wearing is a frock, worn in marching order, field day order, and drill order. It is similar to the tunic worn in review order, having seven brass buttons down the front and white facings, but does not have the white piping down the front edge and on the back vents. The drummers wore the same frock in undress but with a drum badge on the right arm.

The blue field service cap has a badge on the left. This item of dress was adopted around 1894 and replaced the glengarry.
