Lieutenant-Colonel's Uniform c1911

This photo from a Wallis and Wallis auction catalogue is of the full dress uniform of Lieutenant-Colonel Hugh Gilbert Casson. After 1902 the ornate Russia braid figuring on the sleeve and collar for senior officers was discontinued and the simpler pattern which was formerly worn by subalterns was adopted for all officers. The collar badge is a gilt Sphinx and there are 8 buttons down the front. The dark blue trousers have a thin scarlet stripe. Casson was born in 1866 and commissioned into the South Wales Borderers in 1886. He served throughout the Boer War and was promoted to Lt-Col in 1911, commanding the regiment in World War 1. He retired in 1919 with the honorary rank of Brigadier-General and died in 1951.
