39th Garhwalis

Sepoy and Lance-Naik

It would be natural to assume that these are Gurkhas, from the style of their uniform (rifle green with black facings) with the Kilmarnock cap and the trademark kukri knife, but although they were initially recruited into the Gurkha regiments, they were kept separate in the 2nd battalion 3rd Gurkhas and later formed their own regiment. Garhwal is a region west of Nepal and the inhabitants as a race are Khasias. In his book 'The Armies of India' (1911), George MacMunn says this: "Though not such soldiers by instinct as the Gurkha, they are a courageous hill-race who make active and obedient soldiers of considerable fighting value. They are a small people, but not so thick-set and muscular as the Gurkha."
