Officer’s Button c1850



The small gilt button seen here on the heavily embroidered epaulette, has the same design as the larger buttons worn on the front of the coatee. It has the deaths head above crossed laces with the words OR GLORY beneath, and XVII above. The deaths head in this case has the skull placed on top of the bones. The button continued to be used on the tunics after 1855. After c1870 the bones were placed below the skull.
