Drumhorse and Trumpeters 1854

Ebsworth made another coloured sketch of the 17th Lancers, in 1854, at Hounslow, before they embarked for the Crimea in April. This is a copy made by Godfrey Brennen. Mounted lancers in field day order are wearing oil-skin covers to protect their lance caps. They have black sheepskin saddle covers but no shabraques. An officer in mounted review order is behind them. Behind him is a trumpeter with a red plume on his lance cap, while another trumpeter is in dismounted stable dress behind the left-hand figure. On the right of the picture is the grey drumhorse, with dark blue drum banners edged in gold lace and embroidered with the deaths head and motto. Neither the drummer nor the trumpeters wear a pouch-belt. The drumhorse was called Old Pompey.
